The History

Pre-World War 1

1880: Jospeh Pilates was born in Germany & was plagued with asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever. At a young age he began focusing on conditioning and at the age of 14 was used for illustrated anatomical charts. In 1912 he went to England earning a living as a boxer, circus performer and self- defense trainer at Scotland Yard.

During the War

When the war broke out British authorities sent him to 2 different internment camps. The first camp (Lancaster Castle) he taught wrestling & self-defense, he continued his work in the 2nd camp (Isle of Man) creating his mat work which was then called "Contrology". He also worked in the sick bays, deconstructing the beds to use the pulleys, straps and springs to help adapt movements for the sick and injured.

After the War

He was released and returned to Germany to collaborate with Rudolf Laban and Mary Wigman. He also taught at the Hamburg Military Police and once he was pressured to train members of the German Army he left his native country and emigrated to the USA. In 1925 he migrated to the United States and met his wife Clara on the boat who was a kindergarden teacher. Pilates created specail movements to help heal her arthritis

Joe in the States

Arrived in NYC

Clara and Joe founded the first studio together in New York City where they continued to teach until the 1960's. He called the system Contrology which focused on the mind/body centering with the main focus surrounding the core postural muscles.

The Dancer Connect

Martha Graham (modern dance pioneer) came to the states in 1923 and George Balanchine arrived in 1933. They both became devotees and sent all their students to Pilates for training to build their flexibility, strength and stamina. Once the public found out about the ballerinas doing it then soon the "society" women followed.
